Rate relief win for local farmers

After months of adversity, local farmers in the Glenelg Shire will receive a slight relief thanks to the introduction of targeted drought support payments.
Councillors unanimously endorsed the motion to include a rate rebate to primary producers for the 2025/2026 financial year at last month’s unscheduled Council Meeting. These payments, funded through the Primary Production Drought Support Payments program from Local Government Victoria, will mean more than 2,700 eligible properties in the Glenelg Shire will receive a 40 per cent reduction automatically applied to their rates notice.
Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said the relief was timely following a dedicated advocacy campaign.
“Our Council has been vocal in our urgent requests to the State Government to offer drought support for our local farmers, who have been experiencing one of the worst droughts we’ve seen in our region,” she said.
“It was fantastic to see that these ongoing calls were heard and the Government has stepped in with decisive action and offered funding specifically for our Shire.
“We understand the severity of the drought and the stress it places. Whilst our community’s resilience is remarkable, we must continue to stand beside them to help them get through this difficult period.”
Glenelg Shire Councillor John Pepper, a local farmer himself, said he was proud to see that advocacy efforts had been successful.
“It’s been a persistent issue I’ve brought up in previous meetings—our farmers and producers need immediate relief, and I’m glad we’re finally moving forward with practical solutions,” he said.
“Many producers have reached out to me directly, sharing the hardships they’re facing. This underlines how essential these payments are.
“Community feedback has been vital in shaping our response, and why we have decided to offer this relief directly through rates reductions rather than other payments or schemes. I encourage everyone to keep sharing their concerns and suggestions.”
Cr Michael Carr echoed this sentiment, describing it as a significant announcement for the Glenelg Shire.
“Our primary producers have endured months and in some cases years of hardship. This funding will provide immediate relief, it will help producers meet essential costs, maintain operations and begin the process of long-term recovery,” he said.
“This is more than just money – it’s recognition that our community of Glenelg Shire matters and their voice was heard. We [Council] are listening to you and we are advocating for you. We thank the State Government for their funding and the help it will provide to every farmer, family and business impacted by this drought.”
In addition to this targeted drought relief, Council continues to offer broader financial support through its hardship policy, ensuring all ratepayers have access to flexible payment options. This includes payment plans and measures to help residents manage their rates with dignity and ease.
