Local young people have been building confidence, skills and connection through two successful surf‑based programs delivered by Glenelg Shire Council at Cape Bridgewater, in partnership with Brophy.

Twenty‑one participants took part in the Go Surf School Holiday Program at Cape Bridgewater during the April school holidays, supported through State Government Engage funding. The program focused on increasing youth participation and encouraging young people to try new activities in a safe and supportive environment.

Participants were mentored by experienced instructors from Go Surf and Port Fairy Surf School and introduced to fundamental surfing techniques and water safety, while building confidence and teamwork through hands‑on learning in the water.

Earlier in the year, a further 21 young people participated in the Stoked Surf Therapy program, delivered by Brophy in partnership with Council and supported through Amplify funding. Delivered over four weeks, the program provided a supportive space for young people to build connections, explore important life topics and engage with their community, while encouraging active lifestyles and positive wellbeing.

Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said the programs highlighted the importance of accessible, youth‑focused opportunities delivered locally across Glenelg Shire.

“These Glenelg Shire programs give young people the chance to try something new, develop confidence and feel connected to their local community,” Cr Stephens said.

Port Fairy Surf School and Go Surf played an important role in supporting delivery of the programs at Cape Bridgewater, contributing their expertise to help create a welcoming and inclusive experience for participants.

The strong participation and diversity of young people involved highlights the value of delivering inclusive, place‑based programs that support young people to learn, connect and thrive within their community.
