Thank You, Glenelg Shire – FOGO is Off to a Fantastic Start!
Published on 22 June 2026
The rollout of Glenelg Shire's Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) kerbside collection service is now complete, with residents embracing the new service with enthusiasm.
With collections now fully established across the mandatory kerbside collection areas of the municipality, the community is already making a significant contribution to reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill. Since the introduction of the FOGO service in April 2026, more than 187 tonnes of food and garden organics had been diverted from landfill by 31 May 2026.
Every banana peel, lawn clipping, coffee ground and vegetable scrap placed in a FOGO bin is helping create a more sustainable future for our region. By separating organic material from general waste, residents are reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving valuable landfill space, and supporting the production of nutrient-rich compost that can be returned to the land.
These early results highlight the community's commitment to sustainable waste management and demonstrate how small everyday actions can make a meaningful difference. Council sincerely thanks residents for their outstanding participation and use of the FOGO service during the first two months of operation.
Mayor Councillor Karen Stephens said the strong early results reflected the community’s commitment to caring for the environment.
"It’s fantastic to see our community getting behind the FOGO service,” Cr Stephens said.
“Diverting more than 187 tonnes of organic material from landfill in just two months is a significant achievement and shows how small changes at home can make a big difference for our environment.”
As Council continues to build on this strong start, residents are encouraged to keep up the great work and make the most of their FOGO service.
Thank you to everyone who has helped make the FOGO rollout such a success. These efforts are already delivering positive environmental outcomes and helping create a cleaner, greener Glenelg Shire for future generations.
Council looks forward to continuing this work alongside the community as we progress future waste management and sustainability initiatives.
