2018 Melbourne Cup visit

Pull out your fascinator and your finest wares, the people’s favourite cup is about to arrive with Spring racing fever.

The countdown is on for the arrival of the Lexus Melbourne Cup to Portland and Glenelg Shire Council is planning a big community celebration.

The iconic cup, awarded in Australia’s richest handicap race, will be touring key sites in Portland on Monday 15 October as part of its global pilgrimage on route to Flemington for the race that stops the nation on Tuesday 6 November.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said council was excited to be accepted as a locality on the 16th annual tour, which takes in 37 destinations, including the United Kingdom, Ireland and Seoul.

“Council is extremely proud and grateful to be included in this exclusive itinerary which covers half a million kilometres celebrating Australia’s rich cultural stories, to a global audience,” Cr Rank said.

“We will be proudly showcasing our modern story, the iconic southern Bluefin tuna catch when it arrives by trawler boat, providing a unique media opportunity for the cup which will capture national news headlines.

“We have worked tirelessly to ensure all facets of our community are provided the opportunity to see the cup with visits scheduled for Bupa Aged Care, Portland Hospital, Portland Bay School, the Portland Library and a private VIP reception at Clock by the Bay.

“Of course when you visit Portland you have to experience our best tourist offerings so the cup will also enjoy a ride on the Portland Cable Tram, visit to our visitor information centre and whale viewing platform. It will be a visit to remember and I strongly urge the community to come along for this rare photo opportunity.”
