MEDIA RELEASE - Industrial Land Strategy endorsed

26 June 2019

The final changes to the Portland Industrial Land Strategy are set to be implemented following a collaborative five years process between the Glenelg Shire Council, State Government and key stakeholders.

Councillors last night endorsed Amendment C90 to the Glenelg Shire Planning Scheme, voting to submit the document to the Minister for Planning for final approval.

Amendment C90 was required to implement the appropriate recommendations of the Portland Industrial Land Strategy into the Glenelg Planning Scheme. The recommendations saw various zoning and overlay changes to particular industrial precincts in Portland to support future development.

The Planning Panel Report issued earlier this year described the recommendations to the scheme as “justified” and “appropriate”, stating:

“The Panel considers that the Amendment has a solid strategic basis from the Industrial Land Strategy through to existing State, regional and local planning policy.”

“The Amendment positively responds to Portland’s declining industry and recognises that it is likely to grow in the future. The proposed new land use framework will encourage investment and development in appropriate industrial locations…and will achieve net community benefit.”

“The Amendment is well founded, strategically justified and should proceed.”

Mayor Cr Anita Rank said it was a great outcome for the community and industry following five years of extensive collaboration.

“This is the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle for the Portland Industrial Land Strategy, with all stakeholders satisfied with the direction of this important document which will guide future sustainable development in Portland,” she said.

“Ultimately it will provide council with certainty and direction to assist in attracting new industry into the future.”

Affected land owners and occupiers were notified in May of this year of the revisions to the Amendment, with no submissions and importantly no objections received as part of this additional period of consultation.

This strategy will result in new and improved land use controls, such as rezoning and new design guidelines for all industrial development, providing guidance in particular for interface areas.
