Have a coffee and chat about the Camino
Published on 06 July 2023
Come along and learn more about one of the world’s most famous pilgrimages as part of a free event at the Glenelg Libraries next week.
The Portland Library are hosting a Camino Coffee and Chat – You can’t ask that! on Thursday 13 July from 6pm as part of their Libraries After Dark program.
The session will be hosted by library staff members Sara Taylor and Tracy Jensen who will chat and share tips about their recent Camino de Santiago pilgrimage across France and Spain.
Libraries and Information Services Manager Tanya Flockhart said it would be an informal, relaxed opportunity for locals, prospective walkers and avid travellers to learn more about the Camino de Santiago.
“Sara and Tracy will be familiar faces to many of our Library members and we are thrilled to have them host this coffee and chat session to talk all things Camino, a hugely popular pilgrimage journey,” she said.
“For those who haven’t heard of the famous walk, the Camino Frances is an ancient pilgrim path that begins in France and finishes in the holy city of Santiago de Compostela. The Cathedral of Santiago is believed to be the final resting place of St. James.
“Although the Camino de Santiago, or Way of St James, has traditionally been a religious pilgrimage, many people now choose it as a walking holiday for other reasons, such as for their fitness or self-development.
“After months of preparation, Sara and Tracy walked over 200km from St Jean Pied de Port, France to Pamplona, Spain and then from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
“Hear stories and anecdotes about their intrepid journey including a treacherous start with a moderate avalanche warning, sharing dormitory style accommodation with 170 other walkers and how they managed to travel over 600km in a car with a stranger to start the second leg of their trip.
“This event is part of our Libraries After Dark program at the Portland Library every Thursday night, which sees the library open until 9pm, with free programs available for the public. No bookings are required for this coffee and chat event and everyone is welcome to come along."
