MEDIA RELEASE - Changes to local outdoor pools

29 November 2018

Pool users in Portland and Heywood are advised of minor changes to their outdoor swimming experience this summer following recent facility audits.

The outdoor slide at the Portland YMCA and the toddler pool at the Heywood Swimming Pool will not be operational this season due to safety concerns and compliance issues.

Grampians Region YMCA Chief Executive Officer Brooke LeSueur said public safety was paramount.

“The facility audits undertaken in September identified that the outdoor slide at Portland was non-compliant against the AS 3533 Amusement Devices Standard due to the minimum required pool depth not being met,” she explained.

“In conjunction with council, we investigated the possible modifications required to the slide to keep it in operation, however the advice received indicated that whilst modifications would possibly lower the risk, the slide would still not meet compliance standards.

“As a result, the outdoor slide will no longer be operational this summer in order to ensure all user groups can enjoy a dip in their local pool in the safest environment possible.

“Furthermore, the audit also identified issues with poor turnover and circulation, causing possible water contamination concerns, at the toddler pool at Heywood. We have been unable to mitigate this risk through additional water testing and treatments and as a consequence the pool will not be available for use.

“The safety of each and every one of our members is first and foremost.”

Ms LeSueur encouraged community members to continue to visit their local swimming pools, with a number of family friendly activities on offer throughout the summer.

“As an alternative to the closure of the outdoor slide and the toddler pool, we will be offering more fun days for families with our giant inflatables this season,” she said.

“Make the most of the warm weather at your local swimming pool this summer and enjoy the perfect place to relax, or stay active, in a safe and monitored environment.”
