Rural Road and Street Numbering

Glenelg Shire is the road/street numbering authority for the municipality.

Rural road numbering is a permanent and easy to follow means of identifying properties in sequence along any street or road in non urban areas.

The number is determined by the distance (in metres) from the start of the road to each property entrance. For example if the property entrance is 250 metres from the start of the road – the 250 metres is divided by 10 and the number is 25. The rural numbering system complies with the Australia/New Zealand Standards.

The odd numbers are on the left hand side of the road and the even numbers are on the right hand side of the road.

This system is beneficial and efficient for many road users:

• Provides a consistent numbering system for all rural roads.
• Emergency Services – (police, ambulance or fire services) can quickly locate the property in an emergency situation.
• Visitors can easily locate the property.
• Goods and services can be quickly delivered.

The rural road number assigned to a property is the official property identifier for that address. However, mail delivery arrangements are the responsibility of Australia Post.

To apply for a rural road number for your property download the form below and submit to the Glenelg Shire.
