MEDIA RELEASE - Australian Kelpie Centre contracts awarded

2 October 2017

Construction of the Australian Kelpie Centre in Casterton has moved a step forward with the contracts for the construction and fit out of the centre approved at last week’s council meeting Tuesday 26 September.

The Glenelg Shire Council recently received grant approval from the Australian Government to construct the Kelpie Interpretive Centre, incorporating the town’s Visitor Information Centre in addition to an interpretive Kelpie display and large meeting room.

Council awarded A W Nicholson Pty Ltd the contract for the construction and fit out of the centre with Thycaline Design & Project Management Pty Ltd awarded the design and construction contract of an interpretive display area showcasing the Kelpie and the Casterton region.

Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the new building would promote the history of Casterton and the birthplace of the Kelpie, assisting to increase tourism in the region.

The announcement of the awarded contracts is big news for the shire. This one-of-a-kind centre will tell the story of how the Kelpie breed became Australia’s favourite working dog and detail the town’s rich pastoral and heritage as Victoria’s first European inland settlement,” Cr Rank said.

“Not only will the construction of the Australian Kelpie Centre promote the great history of Casterton and our region, it will gain major business opportunities for local retailers and tourism operators.

“The Australian Kelpie Centre will enhance the town’s retail precinct, encouraging more local shopping, which will in turn stimulate growth in the region’s economy.”
