MEDIA RELEASE - Portland Library turns green for March

2 March 2021

It’s time to go ‘green’ at the Portland Library this March with a series of free events focusing on sustainability and eco-friendly approaches to living.
Through the Libraries After Dark program, the Portland Library will continue to offer a range of free inclusive and informal activities every Thursday evening. This month the schedule will feature all things ‘green’, with a preserve and pickling demonstration with Spice Cart, a Seed Library launch and a beeswax wrap presentation.

Library and Information Services Manager Tanya Flockhart said there was something for everyone to learn something new.

“To kick off the month we will be screening the popular documentary 2040 from 7pm on 4th March, which looks at the effects of climate change over the next 20 years and what technologies can help reverse the effects,” she said.

“We will then welcome local chefs Hoody & Sebastien from Spice Cart on the 11th March for a special preserve and pickling demonstration. This is a perfect opportunity to learn more about how to preserve your own food using humble ingredients and seeing it transform into something extraordinary.

“Later in March we will launch our very own Seed Library, which will allow new budding and expert gardeners to ‘borrow’ seeds. We will then finish the month with a beeswax wrap workshop, showcasing a sustainable alternative to single-use plastic and cling wrap.

“All these events are free and open to community members of all ages; however, our preserve and pickling and beeswax wrap sessions will require a booking due to a limit on participants.

“I look forward to seeing many new and existing faces visiting the Library and enjoying the special ‘green’ themed events on offer for March. To keep up date with future Libraries After Dark events and activities, please visit the Glenelg Libraries Facebook page.”

The Libraries After Dark program is an initiative of the Moreland City Council and supports libraries across Victoria through funds provided by the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation.

The funding has allowed the Portland Library to extend its opening hours until 10pm every Thursday for the next two years with all regular library services and facilities available in addition to the events and programs being offered.
