Working towards a dementia-friendly community
Published on 27 August 2024
“It Starts With You”, a dementia-friendly workshop hosted by Laurel Gourlay from Dementia Australia, is coming to Portland.
The free session will be hosted by Portland Library on Thursday, 12 September 2024, in the lead up to Dementia Action Week.
The session aims to educate the community on the common misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding dementia and discuss the ways people living with dementia can live well every day.
Glenelg Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Helen Havercroft said it was about creating a dementia-friendly community.
“’Two in three people with dementia are thought to be living in the community so creating a dementia-friendly community is not just about accommodating those who have the condition; it’s about building a society which values and includes everyone, regardless of cognitive ability,” she said.
Dementia impacts close to half a million Australians and more than 1.6 million Australians are involved in their care. It is the second leading cause of death in Australia.
In 2024, there were an estimated 29,000 people with younger onset dementia, expected to rise to 41,000 people by 2054. This can include people in their 30s, 40s and 50s.
“With so many people impacted, it is vital to clear up some misconceptions about it,” Ms Havercroft said.
“A dementia-friendly community takes the whole community.
“By gaining knowledge and understanding, we can offer practical support for those living with dementia and their caregivers.”
