Welcome to Glenelg Shire

We are delighted to welcome you to the Glenelg Shire community. Whether you've moved from near or far, we're pleased you've chosen to call our beautiful shire home.

Encompassing an area of 6,215 square kilometres, the Glenelg Shire includes Portland, Heywood and Casterton and many other small townships and localities with their own characters. Rolling hills and rich agricultural land to the north give way to a scenic and secluded river region to the west. Pine and blue gum plantations line the roads through the hinterland, while a huge expanse of coastal beaches and rugged cliffs form the southern perimeter, making the Glenelg Shire a thriving place to live, visit or study.

Here at Glenelg Shire Council we are leaders and change makers setting ambitious targets and making them happen for our community. We acknowledge and embrace local Aboriginal culture, building a more inclusive future. We are forward thinking. We value each other in a safe, inclusive, and caring way. We celebrate the rich creativity and natural environment that co-exists with our vibrant and resilient economy.

To help you settle in, get the most out of your new surroundings, and learn about the services and support Council and our community provides, we’ve put together a New Residents Information brochure.
