MEDIA RELEASE - Don't fur-get to register your pet

20 April 2018

Pet owners are reminded to register their furry friends following an extension to the deadline for animal registration renewal.

Renewals were due 10 April 2018, however a final notice will be issued in the coming days with a due date of 7 May 2018 to allow additional time for owners to make the required payment.

Animal registration is required under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 and all dogs and cats over three months of age must be microchipped and registered with council.

Local laws team leader Jacqui Muskee said there were still a large number of outstanding animal registration renewals which she hoped to see paid by the May deadline.

“There are approximately 1600 registration renewals that are still outstanding throughout the Glenelg Shire,” she said.

“Pet owners need to advise council if their contact details, or their animal’s details, have changed since the last registration period, including if you have sold or lost your pet, or moved house.

“If you haven’t organised to register your furry friend yet I strongly encourage you to do so before the 7 May to avoid the possible penalty of more than $3000.”

Animal registration payments can be made in person at any of council’s Customer Service Centres located in Portland, Heywood and Casterton, or at Australia Post. Other payment options include internet banking, mail or BPAY.
