MEDIA RELEASE - Arts Glenelg to launch 2018 program in style

10 January 2018

Calling all cabaret lovers and gin enthusiasts, the Portland Arts Centre is set to transform into a bespoke gin bar and theatre as part of the venue’s upcoming season launch event.

The 2018 Arts Glenelg Season Launch will take place on Friday 2 February, offering a pop up gin bar and food van, along with the first show of the season; Mother’s Ruin: A Cabaret about Gin.

Glenelg Shire Council Arts and Culture Manager Susie Lyons said that the launch would be the start of a jam-packed year of performances, exhibitions and activities in the Glenelg Shire.

“The unveiling of the 2018 Arts Program will showcase the year ahead, introducing the eight curated exhibitions and 19 handpicked productions we hope will wow local art lovers,” she said.

“Our first performance for the year and the highlight of the launch evening will be Mother’s Ruin, a historical and hysterical musical journey of the world of gin.

“Rising cabaret stars Maeve Marsden and Libby Woo will take the audience through 18th century London, New York speakeasies and the jungles of Peru as they explore the history of gin through song and story.

“To compliment the gin theme, attendees will be able to order gin infused cocktails made by Café Bahloo and delicious food options from the Little Black Sow before they sit back and enjoy Mother’s Ruin.”

Ms Lyons said that 2018 would also offer an exciting new style of performance for the Portland Arts Centre.

“We planned some fantastic intimate bespoke music events for this year as part of our Small Night In series’,” she said.
“For four Friday evenings throughout the year we will open the doors and invite the after work crowd and music enthusiasts to join us for some contemporary music, food and drinks.

“Australian singer/songwriters This Way North and Mark Lang (Skipping Girl Vinegar) will headline our Small Night In performances for the first half of the year, but make sure to keep an eye out for other acts which will be announced throughout 2018.

“Whether it’s exhibitions, kids entertainment or drama, come along and see what is on the horizon for all things arts in the Glenelg Shire at our launch event this February.”

The Arts Glenelg season launch will begin at 5:30pm on Friday 2 February at the Portland Arts Centre with attendees enjoying drinks, food and entertainment before cabaret show Mother’s Ruin commences at 7:30pm.
