A festive favourite is back in Glenelg Shire this year with the return of the annual Retail Light Display Competition.

Businesses and traders in the Shire are being encouraged to ‘Light Up Glenelg’ in the return of the annual Retail Light Display Competition.

The competition will take place across four weeks in November and December with the competition launching 16 November and running to 6 December.

Local businesses and traders decorating their retail windows can enter online to go into the draw to win a share in the $1,500 cash prize pool.

The competition will also see the return of the highly-popular online voting system introduced last year so the community could participate in the competition and determine their own winner.

This change in format saw incredibly high participation rates from both Casterton and Portland residents and overwhelmingly positive feedback received.

Also based on community feedback, entries will no longer be segregated based on location, with two winners, instead the competition will span across Glenelg Shire with three winners overall.

The winning entries across Glenelg Shire will be determined by the number of likes (votes) received on the entry image displayed.

The most liked will take home the winner’s prize of $750, the second most liked will take home $500, and the third most liked will win $250.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Scott Martin said it was a great opportunity for the business community to “light up” the streets of the Shire and ignite the festive spirit.

“I look forward to seeing what creative and colourful designs are used and the collective impact this will have upon our retail precincts across the Shire,” he said.

Cr Martin also reminded residents to shop locally and help support the region’s business community ahead of the busy Christmas season.

“There are plenty of fantastic shops right here in our backyard for all your presents,” he said.

“This is the busiest time of year for local retailers and let’s help make everyone’s Christmas great this year by choosing local, and ensuring our business community can continue to thrive.”

Entries and photos of window displays close 5pm Wednesday, 6 December.

Online voting will take place between Monday, 11 December, and Monday, 18 December.

Full competition terms and conditions and entry forms are available online via the Glenelg Shire Council website.
