Karreeta Peeneeyt Mara (Portland Child and Family Complex)

What is a community 'hub'?

A 'community hub' is a special place with meaning that invites interaction between local children and their families. It is a place where people feel welcome to sit, chat, and establish new friendships.

The Portland Child and Family Complex

Construction of the Portland Child and Family Complex was completed on 30 June 2010. The Complex is a purpose-built integrated child and family services facility that provides improved accessibility, connectivity, networking and continuity of care, delivering enhanced outcomes for children, families, local service providers, staff and the wider community.

The facility provides integrated specialist support services and community development programs for children aged from 0 – 12 years, and their families.

Hours of Operation

The Complex is open between 7.30am and 6pm.

The Complex is owned and operated by the Glenelg Shire Council with the following services offered:

Long Day Care
Kindergarten
Family Day Care and In Home Care
Maternal Child Health

Naming of the Building

The name of the building as the ‘Portland Child and Family Complex’ was established by the Project Steering Committee (comprised of Councillors and Council staff) for funding and administration purposes.

Following consultations with the Traditional Owners of the Portland language area, the Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages (VACL) and in consultation with the broader community, in September 2011 at a meeting of the Gunditj Mirring Full Group, the traditional Dhauwurd Wurrung name "Karreeta Peeneeyt Mara" - meaning Grow Strong People - was confirmed.
