MEDIA RELEASE - Learn more about men's health and wellbeing

30 September 2019

Portland District Health and the Glenelg Shire Council are partnering together this October to invite community members to learn more about the social and cultural factors that influence health and wellbeing, particularly for men.

Healthy Men, Healthy Communities, a free preventative mental health forum, will take place on Wednesday 16 October at the Portland Library from 6-8pm. The forum will be facilitated by On the Low Down, a leading health initiative targeting adult males living in regional Victoria.

On the Low Down’s David Pearce said the forum would discuss the value of emotional expression, strategies to optimise mental health and wellbeing and links to local support services.

“Research indicates that Australians living in regional communities, particularly men, are struggling with their mental health and wellbeing more than their city counterparts,” he said.

“The Healthy Men, Healthy Communities will unpack what the challenges are for men living in regional areas in seeking help for mental health issues and some of the protective factors.

“The forum will also feature a panel of local services, not just medical, that can offer support and linkages to protect and optimise mental health.

“I invite all community members, both men and women, to come along to the Portland Library on Wednesday 16 October to meet others with common interests, gain an insight into available local health services and develop tools around how to ‘be there’ for a mate, through being there for you first.

“Despite the focus being on men’s mental health, women are greatly encouraged to attend this event as they often play vital support roles for the men in their life, which is equally as important.”

Community members can RSVP for the Healthy Men, Healthy Communities forum via clicking ‘attending’ on the event listing on the Glenelg Shire Facebook page. Alternatively, RSVPs can be made via email by contacting event contacts Jane Ruge on or Craig Keenan on

RSVPs can also be made by calling 1300 GLENELG.
