MEDIA RELEASE - Glenelg Shire says thank you to volunteers

14 May 2020

The Glenelg Shire will recognise National Volunteer’s Week from afar this year, with a virtual ‘thank you’ sent to all volunteers.

National Volunteer Week (NVW) reception events are held annually in May by Council in Nelson, Casterton, Portland and Heywood to recognise the contributions of volunteer groups and individuals.

Due to restrictions on social gatherings this year’s NVW events have been cancelled but Mayor Cr Rank said it was more important than ever to recognise to “lifeblood of our local community”.

“Volunteers play a vital role, lending their time and talents, for no reward or remuneration, to support, encourage and enhance the lives of others,” she said.

“The current pandemic has highlighted the many wonderful people and groups in our Shire who are volunteering their time and resources to help provide support and connection, from the Glenelg Shire Musical Mates group to the free online Kids Friday Fitness sessions. The kindness of our community has been incredible.

“Whilst we can’t celebrate in our usual manner, this year Council will say thank you to our volunteers in a number of virtual ways. This includes a dedicated video from our Councillors, a message on local radio stations, thank you volunteer signs in our entrance boards in Heywood, Casterton and Portland distribution of thank you cards to individuals and volunteer groups.

“To all of our volunteers, you are the heroes in our community. Thank you for your extraordinary contributions and keep up this fantastic work.

“Together, let’s say thank you to all of our volunteers across the shire that really are changing communities and changing lives.”

National Volunteer Week is an annual celebration to recognise the contributions of volunteers across Australia. From 20–26 May thousands of events are held across the country to say thank you to the nation’s six million volunteers.
