MEDIA RELEASE - Council secures funding for Cape Bridgewater

25 May 2020

Cape Bridgewater’s profile as one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches is set to grow even further following a significant funding boost to the coastal area.

The Glenelg Shire Council has secured $1.5 million for the implementation of the Cape Bridgewater Master Plan as part of the Victorian Government’s Building Works program.

The funding will aim to protect the coastal environment, as well as enhancing tourism access, with improvements including beach reclamation, dune reinstatement and vegetation and improved access and connection points to the beach.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the funding announcement was a “landmark occasion” following years of ongoing advocacy.

“It is an incredibly exciting moment for the Glenelg Shire community as we welcome $1.5 million worth of much needed improvements to Cape Bridgewater,” she said.

“The coastal township comprises some of the most beautiful natural attractions in the country, arguably in the world, with local and visitors alike flocking all year round to enjoy all that the popular area has to offer.

“It is a major drawcard for tourism and plays a significant role in our strategic tourism goals, positioned centrally to entice travellers to continue, from the Great Ocean Road, along the Ship Wreck Coast or cross the South Australian border from the Limestone Coast.

“This funding package will ensure Cape Bridgewater’s role as a major tourist attraction is further strengthened, whilst protecting the natural assets for future generations. The improvements will provide greater vehicle mobility within the precinct, pedestrian access to the foreshore and beach and vital accessibility upgrades.

“The project has the potential to provide further economic benefits for the Shire, with an expected increase in visitor numbers and overnight stays, as well as creating further employment opportunities.

“With additional funding secured to develop our iconic Portland Foreshore and Local Port area, the future for the Glenelg Shire is looking bright.”
