MEDIA RELEASE - Duo return to Portland for first ever Small Night In event

2 February 2018

Fresh from their recent Hooked on Portland performance, musical duo This Way North are returning to Portland to headline the first ever Small Night In at the Portland Arts Centre.

The high energy group will perform at the Arts Centre on Friday 16 February at the Small Night In event, with drinks and pre-show entertainment starting from 6:30pm.

Glenelg Shire Council Arts and Culture Manager Susie Lyons said the performance promised to entertain and enthrall music lovers.

“We are thrilled to be able to bring This Way North back to Portland to grace the stage of the Portland Arts Centre for an evening of contemporary music,” she said.

“Hailing from Melbourne, the guitar/drums two-piece band brings power drumming and compelling alt-pop melodies to their unique and exciting sound, which is often likened to that of The Black Keys and Tame Impala.

“The group have been touring nonstop since the start of 2017, playing at national and international festivals including Wide Open Space in Alice Springs and Atmosphere Gathering in Canada.

“With pre show entertainment and drinks on offer before This Way North hit the stage, the first ever Small Night In event is sure to appeal to music lovers of all ages and interests.”

Ms Lyons said there were further Small Night In events planned for 2018 for the community to look forward to.

“The concept behind Small Night In was to create a series of an inviting, fun and laid back events which celebrate contemporary live music,” she said.

“For four Fridays of the year we will throw open the doors to the after work crowd to enjoy music, food and drinks, with acclaimed artists from across Australia performing at our intimate venue.

“For our next Small Night In during May we will welcome Mark Lang from Skipping Girl Vinegar fame who will launch his debut solo release as part of his national launch tour. Mark also performed at Hooked on Portland, so his sounds will be familiar for local audiences.

“We are excited to see what the rest of 2018 will bring for Small Night In and we can’t wait to reveal who the remaining artists will be - these events can only get bigger and better.”

Tickets to Small Night In: This Way North are available for a flat rate of $30 and can be purchased online via or by contacting the Portland Arts Centre directly on 5522 2263.
