MEDIA RELEASE - Nominate a local hero all year round

22 February 2018

Local heroes can now be nominated for their outstanding contributions to their community all year round as part of recent changes to the Australia Day Awards process.

The Glenelg Shire Council have officially opened nominations for the 2019 Australian Day Awards, extending the nomination process from what was previously an eight week period to an eight month period.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said it was an obvious solution to help make the process more convenient and accessible for the community.

“In an exciting change community members can now nominate a person or a group to be recognised for an Australia Day award at any stage throughout the year, something we have never previously offered,” Cr Rank said.

“Our residents celebrate achievements all year round and this will now be reflected in our extended nomination period, offering a greater opportunity for people to nominate those around them.

“I encourage all residents to consider nominating someone they know for an Australia Day Award. We all know someone who makes our community a better place perhaps by the work they do or the encouragement they bring.

“Help us to award the individuals or community groups you believe are worthy of recognition for their commitment to making the Shire a great place to live, work and play.”

Nominations for the 2019 Australia Day Awards close on Friday 19 October 2018.

Nomination forms can be obtained and lodged online at or collect a hardcopy nomination form from any of the Glenelg Shire Customer Service Centres.

Categories are:
• Citizen of the Year
• Young Citizen of the Year
• Senior Citizen of the Year
• Community Group of the Year
The 2019 Australia Day Awards will be announced and presented on Australia Day at events held throughout the Glenelg Shire.
