MEDIA RELEASE - Record success for attendance at Portland Arts Centre

24 January 2019

The Portland Arts Centre has experienced record visitation statistics for the 2018 season, including nine sold out performances and generating more than 2700 ticket sales. The figures are amongst the highest ever recorded for the facility, which has continued to diversify its offerings to appeal for all audiences and age levels.

Glenelg Shire Council Arts and Culture Manager Susie Lyons said it was fantastic to see the community embracing the arts so readily.

“The 2018 Arts Glenelg season included 33 performances and 22 productions, from classical music, puppetry to swing dance and drama. We really covered a broad range of performances in a short amount of time,” she said.

“Of particular note, we introduced the Small Night In series in 2018, offering contemporary live music in an intimate setting. These events were quickly supported by the community and were instrumental for our record success, ensuring the Portland Arts Centre became recognisable as the premier entertainment venue.

“The success of 2018 also couldn't have happened without the support from our loyal patrons, so we extend a big thank you to our wonderful theatregoers for continuing to show your love and support for the arts.”

The Portland Arts Centre is looking to another year of success with the launch of their 2019 program this February.

The ArtsGlenelg Season Launch will take place on Friday 8 February from 6pm at the Portland Arts Centre, offering a pop-up bar, nibbles and the first show of the season; Dance Hall.

“Finucane & Smith’s Dance Hall, which is targeted to adults, will transform the Portland Arts Centre into an intoxicating dance dive, offering line dances, Ethiopian shimmy, a spot of Bollywood and even a touch of ABBA, so get ready to bust a move under the twinkling lights,” said Ms Lyons

“Dance Hall will also feature four local performances, allowing local stars and world famous legends to share the stage together in this special performance. Book your tickets today to avoid disappointment, last year’s show sold out!”
