MEDIA RELEASE - Green waste on hold

25 March 2019

The introduction of a green waste service has been delayed for Glenelg Shire residents for a further twelve months.

Councillors last night voted unanimously to postpone the introduction of a compulsory food organics and garden organics (FOGO) service in the shire until the 2021-2022 financial year.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the postponement was an attempt to reduce the financial burden on households during the current economic uncertainty.

“We came to a historic decision last month as we announced the introduction a FOGO service throughout the shire. The service however was to incur an additional fee to households, a cost which many families may struggle with given the current economic climate,” she said.

“Council has taken this financial impact into serious consideration and as a result, we have decided to postpone the rollout of this service and focus on delivering our essential services to the community, rather than any new additional services.

“We will review FOGO in the new financial year, assessing the economic and social factors at that time.”
