MEDIA RELEASE - Portland Library's Temporary CBD Location Attracts New Trading Hours

27 November 2017

The Portland Library’s temporary relocation to 56 Percy Street to make way for major redevelopments has seen an increase in popularity with visitors, meaning earlier trading hours for the library.

Glenelg Shire Council acting library manager Tanya Flockhart said the amount of residents visiting in the morning had increased since relocating to Percy Street.

“The decision has been made in response to feedback received from the community requesting an opening time of 9am in line with other businesses on Percy Street,” Mrs Flockhart said.

The library’s CBD location will see trading hours change to 9am to 5pm on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 9am to 7pm on a Wednesday with Saturday’s remaining the same from 10am to 4pm.

Mrs Flockhart said all library services are continuing successfully from the Percy Street site.

“Our library users can still request the latest book, or join in any of the children’s and adult activities offered,” she said.
Mrs Flockhart thanked the community and nearby traders for their support in the relocation process of the library.

“The response from community members and local traders has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The relocation has given us the opportunity to attract new members as those passing by doing their shopping are beginning to pop their heads in,” she said.

The library’s State Government funding of $300,000 and co contribution of Council funds will see the redevelopment include new meeting spaces, redesign of staff space, and creation of a dedicated space for creative play and programming for children, and teen chill out area.

Council endorsed a nine month lease agreement for rental of 56 Percy Street, Portland – the former Chicken Feed premises – in the McIntyre Arcade complex which will be home to the library during this exciting construction phase.
