MEDIA RELEASE - Have your say on the Local Law

18 August 2017

Glenelg Shire residents are invited to have their say on how they wish to protect the their neighbourhood as part of a review of council’s General Local Law.

Council will be touring the shire over one week from 24 August 2017 to give residents the chance to make comment on the proposed changes.

The General Local Law protects the amenity and environment, control and keeping of animals, activities on roads and council land, protection of council assets and control of building sites.

The current General Local Law 2008 is due to expire in March 2018.

Mayor Cr Anita Rank said it was important that a large number of residents provided feedback to ensure the proposed Local Law was reflective of community views.

“This Local Law protects the amenity of our shire, the health and safety of the community and allows for us all to enjoy the great lifestyle that we have here in Glenelg,” she said.

“We want people to have fair use and enjoyment of private and public land, however we need controls to ensure that people are not unfairly impacted by the unreasonable actions of others.

“I encourage all residents to take the opportunity to find out more about the draft changes by speaking with Local Laws officers during the consultation period.

“Staff are visiting a number of townships during August and September to help make it easier for community members to have their say.”

Copies of the Local Law, explanatory material and feedback forms can be obtained via or from any of council’s Customer Service Centres in Portland, Casterton or Heywood.
