MEDIA RELEASE - Portland Coastal Management Plan open for Community Consultation

19 October 2017

You are invited to have your say on the Draft Portland Coastal Management Plan which identifies priorities and provides strategic direction for the sustainable local management of coastal Crown land.

The plan covers Crown land from the Portland foreshore and Trawler Wharf in the south through to Henty Bay Beachfront Holiday Park in Dutton Way in the north.

Residents are invited to have their say at a community drop-in session on Monday 23 October at the Portland Bowling Club held between 4:30-7:30pm where they will be able to speak with a consultant and various council staff about the plan.

Glenelg Shire Council environmental sustainability coordinator Adam Smith said community input had helped guide the development of the Draft Plan in May earlier this year.

“The Portland Coastal Management Plan will guide the management of Portland’s coast for the next five years,” Mr Smith said.

“The drop-in session will not only allow community members to have their say, it will also educate residents about the environmental, heritage and recreational values within the coastal Crown land.”

Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank said council was seeking community input and feedback into how they believe the land should be managed.

“Community input plays a large role in the development of the Coastal Management Plan and future management of the coastal Crown land,” Cr Rank said.

“It is important for community members to get involved in local projects and come to these sessions to ensure their knowledge and experience is taken into consideration.”
