MEDIA RELEASE - Hooked On Portland introduces six fish species to fishing comp

5 January 2018

Dust off your fishing rods and prepare your boats, the inaugural Hooked On Portland Fishing Competition will test all anglers this Australia Day long weekend.

The two-day competition on January 27 and 28, hosted by Glenelg Shire Council, Portland Lions Club, Portland Sports Fishing Club and in conjunction with Victorian Fishing Authority, is open to both boat and land anglers with competitors vying for the heaviest catch across six species of fish.

The species include kingfish, snapper, whiting, gummy shark, salmon and tuna with the heaviest in each category to receive a major cash prize of $250.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the competition was expected to draw keen anglers from across the country.

“We are extremely excited to host this inaugural January competition which has been developed due to the success of the popular month-long Hooked on Tuna festival which is run each Autumn and attracts hundreds of anglers from across Australia,” Cr Rank said.

“The beauty of this new competition is that whether you are a keen angler with a big boat or a beginner fishing off the breakwater - everyone has the chance to win. This competition is open to all ages and abilities with opportunities for all to win a big cash prize.”

Entry is $10 per adult and $5 for juniors with forms now available for download at the Hooked Portland website
https://vfa.vic.gov.au/recreational-fishing/featured/hooked-on-portland or alternatively for collection at Compleat Angler, Portland Bait and Tackle or the Portland Visitor Information Centre.

The competition will begin from 6am Saturday 27 January with weigh-ins from 12noon to 6pm at the Portland Yacht Club on Saturday. Additional weigh-ins will occur from 8am until 10am on Sunday 28 January, followed by a community breakfast, hosted by the Portland Lions Club where the official winners will be declared.

Cr Rank said the fishing competition was a major drawcard of the three day Hooked on Portland festival which would include appearances by some of Australia’s biggest fishing identities.

Among the event’s guest speakers is adventurer fisherman Aaron Habgood and fisheries expert Dr Corey Green who will feature at the Portland Yacht Club on Saturday 27 from 12pm to 1:30pm. “Co-host of Reel Adventures and owner of Reds Fishing Adventures, Aaron ‘Red’ Habgood will be teaching local fishermen the safe way to catch their dream fish as well as sharing his many fishing stories from around the globe,” Cr Rank said.

“Aaron is well-known in the fishing community for his passion for the industry, travelling to Hawaii, Vanuatu and of course Portland in search of the perfect catch.

“Best known for his success catching big snapper, gummy sharks and king george whiting, Aaron has a wealth of knowledge to share at the Hooked On Portland festival to help fishers master an elusive catch,” she said.

Dr Green who is a Victorian Fisheries scientist will be sharing information about the latest research on both southern bluefin tuna and yellowtail kingfish, the two prized species caught in Portland waters.

“The Portland region continues to be a great location for targeting southern bluefin tuna and yellowtail kingfish,” Dr Green said. “It is exciting to see large numbers of both species inhabiting these waters and the research is revealing some interesting facts.”
