MEDIA RELEASE - Portland Coastal Management Plan adopted

28 February 2018

A five year vision has been set for Portland’s iconic coastlines following the adoption of the Portland Coastal Management Plan at last night’s Ordinary Council Meeting.

The plan, a joint project with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, will provide strategic direction and policy for the sustainable local management of coastal Crown land. It covers Crown land from the Portland foreshore and Trawler Wharf in the south through to Henty Bay Beachfront Holiday Park in Dutton Way in the north.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the plan will foster future decision making, including works programs, budgets and potential funding opportunities.

“The Portland Coastal Management Plan will guide the management of Portland’s coast for the next five years,” she said.

““The plan outlines key actions and recommendations for future development and use along the coastline, including improving trail connections, ensuring appropriate buffers between cliff tops and properties and sympathetic revegetation works to assist shoreline stabilisation.

“It is a comprehensive document that has clearly addressed the values, challenges and opportunities of our region’s world famous coastlines.”

Cr Rank also noted the significant community input that has contributed to the final draft of the plan.

“This plan has been shaped by the many voices of our community. During consultation periods, the public and stakeholders shared stories, values, experiences and expectations which have informed the preparation of this plan,” she said.

The Portland Coastal Management Plan will now be sent to the Minister for final approval.
