MEDIA RELEASE - Rank named Rail Alliance deputy chair

25 February 2019

Glenelg Shire’s campaign for rail investment has been strengthened with Mayor Cr Anita Rank elected deputy chair of the state’s peak rail advocacy body.

Cr Rank was yesterday elected deputy chair of the Rail Freight Alliance at the board’s AGM in Melbourne, replacing Cr Ron Eason from the Pyrenees Shire Council in the leadership position.

Cr Glenn Milne of Mildura Rural City was reappointed alliance chair unopposed, working alongside Reid Mather as chief executive officer.

Cr Rank said she was proud to join other passionate regional leaders on the board, advocating for critical rail investment to improve supply chain efficiencies and attract new business and jobs to the western region.

“There is no doubt that rail is one of the most important issues on our regional agenda. It is critical to growing our economy, delivering freight and goods efficiently to our regions and to global export markets, in addition to opportunities for passenger connections,” she said.

“I will be working hard to ensure regional Victoria, and indeed the western district, is top of the agenda for our political leaders, attracting funding to make the final stages of the Murray Basin Rail Project a reality.

“The Portland line is the missing link in this national rail project, stranding our line from the rest of the Victorian rail network as it is only rated at a 19 tonne axle loading, putting us at a competitive disadvantage against our regional neighbours.

“A minimum tonne axle loading of 23 is required to increase rail wagon loading capacity to provide a level playing field with the port of Geelong and provide benefits to all exporters in western Victoria.”

Cr Rank’s appointment follow’s council’s strong history with the rail advocacy group with Cr Geoff White a former chair and deputy chair with association covering more than two decades.

“I am extremely proud to be following in the footsteps of my esteemed council colleague Geoff White who still has much knowledge and experience to share on how we can best utilise and grow our rail network,” Cr Rank said.

“I look forward to his mentorship as I work with fellow alliance members to gain the best for our regional communities.”
