MEDIA RELEASE - Moana Hope headlines gender equity project launch

30 April 2019

High profile sportswoman Moana Hope will visit the Glenelg Shire this May to help launch an innovative project seeking to promote gender equity.

Hope, a professional footballer with the AFL Women’s League (AFLW), will be keynote speaker for the Project Respect Heywood Launch on Wednesday 15 May at the Heywood Community Hall.

Project Respect Heywood is a primary prevention project aimed at harnessing community strength to promote gender equity. The project is facilitated by the Glenelg Shire Council through the support of Heywood Rural Health and Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West.

Project Respect Heywood project officer Hara Carragher was delighted to have Hope, one of the women’s game’s most recognisable players, on board to share her experiences of gender equity in the national sporting landscape.

“Hope has been one of the few players who have borne the brunt of public attention and media scrutiny across the first two years of the national women’s competition. Her resilience and advocacy during this period has ensured that the women’s league has been able to grow so successfully,” Ms Carragher said.

“During the launch event Hope will reflect on her triumphs and struggles as a professional women’s athlete, which will lead into a panel discussion on how we can work together to create a safe, accessible and equal community for women and girls.

“The panellists will include leaders from local organisations who will share the tools needed to promote gender equity and enact change within different settings.

“I encourage community members of all ages and interests to take the opportunity to attend this insightful evening of discussion and help us create a lasting culture that promotes respectful relationships.”
