MEDIA RELEASE - Portland CBD to light up for the festive season

14 October 2019

Portland’s CBD will turn into a twinkling festive wonderland next month with Christmas lights and state of the art lighting projections.

The Portland Light Up Night will kick start the festive season on Friday 22 November, with a 5s at 5 event hosted by the Committee for Portland, a late night shopping bonanza and the chance to win big prizes.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said a highlight of the evening would be the official ‘switching on’ of city’s Norfolk Pine Christmas lights and new lighting projections in Percy, Julia, Bentinck, Henty and Cliff Streets.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Portland Observer and the Committee for Portland to help spread the Christmas cheer early as part of the Portland Light Up Night event, encouraging people to get out and shop local and celebrate our great retail community” she said.

“I am pleased to confirm that this year our Christmas light display will feature an exciting new element – not only will we be lighting up the traditional Christmas tree, we will also be lighting up particular buildings around town with state of the art lighting projections.

“Various sites throughout the Portland CBD have been selected, including shop fronts and iconic buildings such as the Macs Hotel, the Wesley Uniting Church and History House.

“As part of the Light Up Night we will host a fun competition to help eventgoers spot all of the projections. Wayfinding maps will be provided and stamps will be on offer at each lighting project site, with the first community member who visits all lighting projection locations and collects all stamps the lucky winner. A lucky draw prize will also be drawn on the evening.

“The fun and games will also extend to businesses, with a CBD wide Christmas window decoration competition. The decorations will provide an additional incentive for shoppers to visit local retailers and snap up a bargain as part of the late night shopping trade.

“To be eligible for the Christmas window decoration competition all businesses must have their displays installed by Light Up Night.

“With competitions, bargains and more on offer this Light Up Night we are anticipating to welcome hundreds to the Portland CBD for a fun night out for the whole family.”
