MEDIA RELEASE - Council provides the xmas gift answers

11 December 2018

Lost for the Christmas gift ideas? Why not buy a gift with a difference and help promote our iconic destinations.

Glenelg Shire Council’s unique Casterton - Kelpie Country and Portland – Whale Watching Capital specialised number plates are the perfect gift for that ‘hard to buy for’ person this festive season.

Since launching two years ago the plates have become sought after items, with parochial locals fitting the plates to their vehicles, showcasing their beloved hometowns.

Mayor Cr Anita Rank said to date 90 plates had sold with 37 Portland and 53 Casterton plates purchased.

“Forget the socks for dad, pot plant for mum or box of chocolates for a sibling; a number plate is the perfect way to show you have thought outside the box this festive season for that motoring enthusiast,” Cr Rank said.

“These number plates are a great way to highlight the attractions in our local destinations, acting as a talking point for the many people who have put them on their vehicles or motorhome.

“We have heard stories of travelling great lengths across the country and being asked by people about the destination they are promoting on their vehicle. A great talking point for attracting new visitors to our region.

“It has also been pleasing to see past Portland and Casterton residents wanting to purchase a plate so they can share a little piece of their former home with people. It has also been staggering the interest shown from plate collectors, wanting to add our unique story to their collection with the hopes of perhaps making money in a sale in years to come.”

The specialised number plates are available for purchase from council customer service centres in Portland, Casterton and Heywood.

Cr Rank said plates were not sold in sequential order so people could pick a “lucky number” for their plate.

“Whether it’s a birth date, wedding anniversary or perhaps a footy geurnsey number; whatever the sequence you can have the luxury of picking your own plate preference,” she said.
