MEDIA RELEASE - The key to changing place

5 August 2019

Portland’s Changing Place amenities are now open with residents given the ability to order a universal key to gain 24 hour access.

The all access amenities are larger than standard accessible toilets and have extra features including a peninsula toilet, height adjustable adult sized changing table, shower bed, a tracking hoist system and space for two carers providing a safer and cleaner environment for visitors with a disability.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said council was pleased to see the toilets being regularly used, with visitors travelling from across the region because of the new accessible space.

“These amenities allow an even broader cross section of our community to use the popular recreation space, and attend the various events and festivals scheduled on the parkland space throughout the year,” Cr Rank said.

“To ensure planning is never required, I strongly urge people to order a Changing Place key. This provides universal access to all of the Changing Place amenities across the country and can ensure people are catered for wherever their journey.

“Changing Place amenities are located at various popular recreation spaces across the country with our closest neighbouring amenities at Horsham and Ballarat.

“We are proud to join this national network to allow an even greater number of people to experience our amazing foreshore area.

“The addition of an all-abilities playground in the near future will further build our destination profile and visitor experience.”
The new-look playground is currently under construction, with demolition of the former playground and earthworks due to begin this week. This facility will include the addition of two disabled car parking spaces to cater for the upgraded facilities.

Keys for the Lee Breakwater Road Changing Place toilet, which neighbours the standard amenities, is available by booking from the Portland Customer Service Centre, or the Portland Visitor Information Centre.
